There are so many reasons why we communicate and a variety of functions that we use language for. Most adults think of naming, requesting, and answering questions as the first couple of language functions. Asking questions like, “what’s this?” “what’s that?” and “what do you want?” There are so many more ways to use language that you can show your child how to use! Explore these functions below and think of new ways to model communication at home. Here are some ideas to get you started!


Expressing likes/dislikes: Yummy! I like it! This is fun! I don’t like. Yucky. No more.

Gain attention: Mommy look! Hey, let’s play!

Greeting: Good morning! Night, night. See you later!

Directing: Kick the ball! Blow more bubbles. Open the door. Pour it out!

Asking for help: Help me push. Mama squeeze bottle. Daddy turn key!

Expressing feelings: I feel tired. I’m so excited! You make me happy. He looks sad.
