Create More Opportunities

Increasing communication opportunities throughout the day is a great way to give language models and provide more chances for your child to communicate!

Here are some ideas and strategies you can use to create motivating and meaningful communication opportunities:

HELP! LET'S GET IT!

Place desired items in sight but out of reach so your child has to ask for items or for your help! You can put them on a shelf or in a clear/opaque container they need your help to open.

ONE, TWO, THREE, MORE!

Give only one or even a few pieces at a time. Snacks or toys are great for asking for "more" and using describing words to request like "red crayon, big block, two chips, or strawberry gummy". This can also be an interactive activity with your child directing you place the items in different places or how to make them move!

OOPS!

Make silly mistakes! If your child asks for the dino, you give them the bear -> child corrects you by shaking their head or saying something, you model, “uh-oh, that’s not dino! That’s bear. Here’s dino.”

Set things up in a way that requires your help. Store toys or snacks in closed containers they need your help to open. Provide toys and items that require help to use.

Pro Tip: Stay away from "mind-reading" or giving your child what they want/need even before they communicate for it. If they don't have the opportunity and things just come to them, they not only lose that chance to communicate for them, and they also don't ever feel like they need to communicate since it'll happen whether or not they use their communication skills!

Think of what your child loves, frequently uses, and enjoys. Creating opportunities around whatever they may be, will be way more meaningful for your child! This helps amp up motivation, engagement, and connection.

Give these a try at home today!
