Creating a Language-Rich Environment

Routines- Create daily routines and provide similar language to create a language rich environment. Example, getting dressed “Let’s get ready! Put on shirt! One shoe, two shoes.” Play, movement, reading, and meals times are great routines to provide language modeling and see spontaneous communication!

  1. Be silly- Make communication fun with voice intonation, facial expression, body movements, and incorporate their favorite things. This helps with motivation and forming meaningful language connections.

  2. Core words- Focus on functional core words that make up most of our daily communication rather than academic words like letters, shapes, and colors. These are not as functional for language development as words like: go, more, open, help, all done, up, eat, like, want, etc.

  3. Meet your child where they’re at- If your child is using 1-2 words, give them 1-4 words at a time. If your child is not using spoken words, give them 1-2 words at a time. Meeting them at their level helps with language processing and learning!
