Honor All Communication

scoop speech communication tips

Validate all communication! If your child is pointing, gesturing, signing, or using another modality to communicate with you, honor that! You don't have to make them "say" or wait for them to "say it". It may cause frustration and lead to less communication attempts. We want to remove that pressure and expectation that may cause a negative experience and provide models and examples of communication skills instead. By acknowledging your child's communication, even if it's not spoken, you are helping them build the skills and the confidence to keep communicating!

Use all communication attempts as opportunities to MODEL language, both spoken and not!

More examples:

Reaches for ball "(point to ball) Ball! Play ball! Good choice ball."

Signs more "(sign more)More! Here's more! More cereal.

Points to symbol/picture "(point to picture or direction) Potty! Yes, let's go potty!"
