Transitioning & Cleaning Up for Kids

Transitioning to a new activity or place for your child can sometimes be a challenge. Swap the power struggle for calm communication! Here are some tips to help with transitions and clean up time:

If it's not already routine or if you're building new routines, you can use visuals to preview what's happening in their day, use music to time activities (once the music stops, it's time to __), or use a visual timer so they can see how much time they have.

Don't ask questions like Can you__? Are you ready to__? Wanna go __? if you're not willing to accept "No" for an answer.

Use statements like these instead! Give choices to help the transition (wanna walk or hop to the door), sing songs, or turn clean up/moving into a game!

Here are some helpful phrases you can use to assist with transitions and clean up!

  • What’s next?

  • All done!

  • Time to clean up!

  • Let’s do something else.

  • 2 more minutes!

  • It’s time to ______

  • Let’s _______

Tips for building transition and clean up routines:

  • Predictability- stick to the same time of day or after the same activities so they know what to expect

  • Set examples- show them how to put away items, establish a place for everything so they know where things go

  • Make it fun- make it a game, praise their efforts, play their favorite songs, and do it together
