When modeling language at home, it’s best to focus on core words rather than academic words.
Academic words include shapes, colors, numbers, and letters. These are not as functional for language development as core words.
Core words are words we use frequently and can communicate ideas across settings. These are usually verbs and adjectives that make up most of the words we use for daily communication like: go, stop, more, open, help, all done, up, eat, drink, like, want, look, on, off.
Words in action:
Playing- Go car! Open box. Turn on!
Bathtime- More bubbles! Help squeeze. Water off.
Snacktime- Eat cheese. All done. Clean up!
Getting ready- Hat on. Help zip! Foot in.
At the store- Look cereal! Want banana. Go home.
