5 Tips for Reading with Your Child

Reading books with your child is a natural way to build their speech and language skills! It also fosters early literacy skills.

Here are 5 tips for reading with your child at home:

  1. You don’t have to read books word for word. You can talk about pictures, make silly sounds, sing songs, act out what’s happening, and make connections to things in your life!

  2. Let your child read the book how they want to. If it’s by page, jumping around, or rereading favorite parts over and over!

  3. Repeat and pause. Reading the same books regularly and repetition of words during reading time allows your child to become familiar with the book, the words, and repetitive phrases. Pause at the end of phrases or on each page to give your child the opportunity to finish phrases, answer simple questions, and initiate!

  4. Reduce distractions. Turn off any music, screens, and put toys out of sight. Sit or lay next to each other and make sure they can see your face as much as possible.

  5. Play with books if they’re not interested in reading it. You can stack them up, wear as a hat, or play peekaboo! Reading should be fun and this is a great way to build a positive relationship with books.
