Caregiver coaching is a therapy approach SLPs (Speech-Language Pathologists) use, especially for early intervention and as a part of a child's plan of care.
During caregiver coaching the SLP supports you, the parent or caregiver, with education, strategies, and examples for how to support your child’s communication development at home. The SLP works with you and your child instead of working only with your child one-on-one. This is an effective way to improve a child’s communication skills since they spend more time at home with parents and caregivers than they do in speech sessions with the SLP alone. So the SLP will support you to learn and use strategies that you can implement at home with your child, even when the therapist isn’t there. This is a collaborative approach that is effective for supporting speech and language skills across settings (home, school, community, etc.).
Here’s what you can expect from caregiver coaching sessions:
You’ll talk about things that you need help with, where you need support, and what’s going well.
Observe as the SLP demonstrates strategies and activities with your child so you know what to do at home.
Practice what you’ve observed and get helpful feedback about how to be more effective.
Reflect and problem solve to help you develop knowledge and skills that are the most practical, functional, and effective for you and your family.
Plan and identify what you want to work on as a team!
