Springtime Language

kid in spring

Spring is here! Take some time each day to model language for your child in meaningful ways and with interesting activities. Here are some ideas to help you spark ideas of your own:

Go Outside

Go to your favorite local playground, beach, or favorite outdoor place! Do animal actions or build things out of sand, sticks, or leaves. Go outside and blow bubbles! How many can you pop? Spot 5 things that are wet, find 3 things that are green, or collect things that are hard. Talk about things that are loud or quiet. How many bugs can you think of? Name 7 pieces of clothing that you wear when it’s sunny, rainy, or windy. Plant something with your child and watch it grow!

Describe

Describe a flower, a tree, a bug, or a rainbow. Talk about what it looks like (color, size, shape), sounds like, what are its parts, what does it do or what do you do with it, what it’s made of, and where you can find it! Compare and contrast: Talk about how flowers and trees or sand and dirt are alike and how they are different. How are a bird and a butterfly alike? How are they different?

Books

Themed books about Spring are great ways to build connections with the world around your child. You can bring any book outside to identify vocabulary and talk about similarities, too! You don’t have to read books word for word. Focus on a word or two on each page. Maybe it’s a person, place, or thing that you can find around you. It could be an action word you see and can act out together. Talk about your favorite parts and what happened in the story. Go on an adventure to your local library today and find a book about Spring and nature!

Art and Imagination

Draw a picture, build a sculpture, or make an original creation. Talk about what you made! Go outside and draw with chalk or write letters in sand or dirt. Use food to make a picture on your plate or find creative ways to recycle things around your house! Play with playdough and create different things you find in nature. Bring your child’s favorite toys outside and model language around it. See who can make the best ramp in the sand to race balls or cars, build a house with sticks and leaves for toy figures and animals, or pretend to be a restaurant and take turns being the chef and the customer serving up imaginative dishes!

Have lots of fun this Spring helping your child's speech and language skills bloom!
